New Year’s Eve with Soul Patch
December 31, 2017 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm
Western Edge Cellars is proud to present Sol Patch this New Year’s Eve!
In early 2000, after a chance meeting between Bryan Maldonado and Melissa Weatherly, Sol Patch was formed. A discussion over jazz and blues music lead to the discovery of each other’s individual talents. A few weeks later, they decided to put together a duet, write some songs, give it
wings and let it fly. Que sera, sera.
Bryan’s interest in music began at a very early age. His musical taste was vast and always growing. He drew inspiration from groups like Van Morrison, Eric Clapton,Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Neil Young, Santana, The Band, Elvis, Jose Feliciano, Los Lobos, The Ramones, Pearl Jam, and many more. It wasn’t until he first heard the Beatles that a creative spark was ignited , and he began writing his first songs. He was a member and vocalist of Paris Green, a garage band of which he and fellow classmates formed together while still in Jr. High School. While Bryan started to weigh in on his writing skills, the band continued on into early adulthood, performing original songs as well as classic favorites of the time. After high school, he and other members of the group moved to Houston where he also pursued an Art degree. Eventually, he tired of “life in a concrete jungle”, left the group, and moved to the Texas Hill Country where his heart had always been, and the place where he would eventually have a chance meeting that would change his life.
Melissa Weatherly was born into a musical family of singers and musicians. Her roots in Gospel music go as far back as early childhood. As a child, her late-uncle Monk recognized her natural-born talent to sing, and encouraged her to pursue her dreams. She holds his advice close to her heart to this day. As Melissa learned to sing harmony sitting next to her Mother in church, she also sang as a soloist, under the guidance of her band leader in high school, earning spots to State Finals 3 years in a row. She continued to share her talents after high school, singing at weddings and parties, and even sitting in with the house band when the rodeo blew through town. Her true-inspiration came when she heard Karen Carpenter for the first time. She sharpened her harmony skills by singing to all of her albums and songs. Melissa also loved to sing with jazz, classic standards, and 60’s & 70’s classic rock. She knew that she wanted to pursue her dreams of being a performer, but just wasn’t sure how to do it. Not until she had the same chance meeting that changed her life as well.
Armed with a strong repertoire of songs between them, they started performing at open mics at various venues in the hill country, where they developed a small following. In the next few years, as the fan base grew, they became a favorite in the growing music scene surrounding the Texas Hill Country. Soon after, they put together a band, named the group “Sol Patch”, and began performing in live music venues in the region. They also began playing for a variety of benefits, private functions, house concerts, special events and festivals all across Texas.
